Today was a big day on the trail. Artur Davis unveiled his plan entitled "Securing Alabama's Economic Future: A plan to create the jobs of tomorrow, today." Click here to read a summary of his plan. Artur spent the whole day talking about his new ideas to put Alabamians back to work.

We started the day in Montgomery where Congressman Davis spoke at a press conference on the steps of the State Capitol. The rain held off and it was a great event. Ms. Oveta White introduced Rep. Davis. She is a business owner and president of the Montgomery Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. After she spoke, Rep. Davis talked about the four planks of his plan to create jobs and transform Alabama's economy.

Next, we went to Birmingham Fastener, Inc. - one of the world's largest manufacturers of T-head bolts. The company employs about 150 people in Birmingham and has distribution centers across the country. The bolts they make are used in structures such as cell phone towers and bridges -- they even supplied 60,000 bolts when the Cincinatti Reds Stadium was built!

In the packaging operations facility, Artur Davis talked about the importance of supporting our existing industries in Alabama and boosting manufacturing at companies like Birmingham Fastener. He was joined by Mr. Robert Kelly, Founder of Kelly Construction Company, and Mr. Jim Proctor, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of McWane, Inc. Here are some pictures from the event:

Rep. Davis took a golf cart tour of the buildings at the plant. He got to see the different types of nuts and bolts they make.

  • Birmingham Fastener founder Howard Tinney wants the industry to know the Alabama-based manufacturer and distributor remains in business.

An industry veteran quoted in the October 20, 2009, issue of FIN referred to Birmingham Fasteners as being one of numerous fastener manufacturing names to disappear after the tariffs of the 1970s.

However, Tinney pointed out that the current Birmingham Fasteners is the only company to hold the name.

Many people in the industry referred to the Bethlehem Steel fastener division or Lamson & Sessions' Birmingham operations as simply, "Birmingham."

Birmingham Fastener is entering its 30th year of manufacturing and distributing fasteners.

Birmingham Fastener manufactures custom and non standard fasteners for the structural steel fabrication, metal building manufacturers, transportation, water works and utilities, OEMs, MRO, construction and other industries.

Birmingham also distributes fasteners through its Hanceville Distribution Center in Hanceville, AL. The Alabama Aerospace division, founded in 1995, supplies aerospace, military and commercial fasteners and electronic components. Alabama Aerospace stocks 250,000 line items from 150 manufacturers.

Founded in 1980 by Howard Tinney, Birmingham Fastener has facilities in Alabama, Connecticut, Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Florida and is headquartered at 931 Avenue W, Birmingham, AL 35214. Tel: 205 595-3511 Fax 205 591-7107 ©2009 GlobalFastenerNews.com
